Salacious Revue Returns for Open Ended Run

THE BEST SEX OF THE XX CENTURY SALE
Begins November 27 at Theater for the New City

“While we love it for its raunch and pun humor, there’s more to ‘Best Sex’ than cheap coital comedy. Its commentary on the evolution of sexual politics and identity is as true as any history lesson…well done and (im)pure fun”—Back Stage

“cleverly pun ridden and appropriately ludicrous”—Village Voice

Attention all bargain shoppers! THE BEST SEX OF THE XX CENTURY SALE is back! This hit comic review that delves into sexual history—straight, bi, gay, and transsexual—over the last 100 years returns for an open-ended run beginning November 27th at Theater for the New City. It was written and developed by Lissa Moira and Richard West featuring a cast of 16 performers. Opening night is set for December 3rd.

THE BEST SEX OF THE XX CENTURY SALE is set during an auction of memorabilia from the past 100 years. These items include Gloria Steinem’s singed bra, Elvis’ peanut butter, Marlon Brando’s bike from The Wild One, a lock of Mia Farrow’s hair, Greta Garbo’s Grand Hotel key, and Hugh Heffner’s Playboy Magazines. Each item comes with a comical song and a colorful story about how it relates to our sexual development as a nation. Along the way, the show highlights all of the touchstones of sexuality in the last century: the pill, women’s rights, the gay movement, phone sex, Viagra, and internet porn. The show also includes musical appearances by some unforgettable sexual icons of the past century: Mae West, Madonna, Elvis, Monica Lewinsky and more.

The piece draws its musical inspiration from over 30 popular songs including I Wanna Be Loved by You, Cheek to Cheek, Call Me, I Whistle a Happy Tune, Blue Suede Shoes, The Lady is a Tramp, and It's My Party. Each song has been playfully reworked by Moira and West. THE BEST SEX OF THE XX CENTURY SALE was originally produced in 1997 at The Duplex and later received an extended run at Theater for the New City.

Lissa Moira is the recipient of two Jerome Foundation grants. She was a finalist for the 2001 International Chesterfield/Paramount screenwriting competition. As an actress she has appeared in numerous productions including Slap! or, School for Slaves, Rain, and Small Town Girls With Big Problems (for which she won an OOBR award). As a writer, she penned the dramedy Time It Is and the screenplay Dead Canaries (starring Charles Durning, Dan Lauria and Dee Wallace Stone).

Richard West is a composer and musician. He has written and performed numerous sacrificial pieces for radio and stage including Sexual Psychobabble (also with Moira), Bohemia on Wry, Coastal Complexes, and The Last Temptation of Warhol.

THE BEST SEX OF THE XX CENTURY SALE runs every Friday and Saturday at 10:30 pm beginning November 27th (no show Dec. 24, 25, Dec. 31, Jan 10). Tickets are $15.
